COMMEMORATING THE INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING
Drug abuse involves the misuse of substances—from prescription and over-the-counter medications to illicit drugs like heroin and cocaine. To strengthen global action against this challenge, the 26th of June is observed as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This year’s theme, “Listen First – Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe”, inspired two of VSO’s National Graduate Volunteers, Adeboye Gracious and Jacob Mercy, supported by Olive Community Development Initiative (OCDI), to organize a student convergence in Moro LGA, Kwara State (Jebba and Olokonla) on 28th June. Over 12 schools participated, with students engaging in dramas, recitations, quizzes, debates, and speeches to highlight the dangers of drug abuse. The event also included state dignitaries, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Federal Road Safety Officers, and teachers, with all participants receiving gifts in recognition of their efforts.
