Quality science education is a foundation for innovation and national development—yet many schools still face a shortage of skilled teachers. The National Graduate Volunteer Programme is bridging this gap in Kwara State by equipping classrooms with passionate science graduates who are not only teaching, but inspiring the next generation of thinkers, innovators, and problem-solvers.

The National Graduate Volunteer Programme is a strategic initiative aimed at supporting the Kwara State Government in strengthening the teaching and learning of science-related subjects in selected secondary schools across Ifelodun and Moro Local Government Areas.
Recognizing the critical gap in the teaching of science subjects, Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Nigeria, in partnership with the Kwara State Ministry of Education and Olive Community Development Initiative (OCDI), deployed 10 university graduates with science qualifications to serve as volunteer teachers in 10 selected secondary schools. These volunteers are engaged for a period of one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance.
Beyond addressing the shortage of science teachers, the programme is designed to improve the quality of education through innovative and student-centered teaching approaches. The National Volunteers utilize 21st-century teaching methods to make learning more engaging, practical, and impactful for students, particularly in senior classes.
To further enrich the learning experience, the volunteers actively lead and support extracurricular activities such as quizzes, debates, and the celebration of international days. They also promote school-based enterprises, helping students develop critical thinking, teamwork, and entrepreneurial skills alongside their academic learning.
This initiative is not just filling a gap—it is transforming classrooms into spaces of curiosity, confidence, and possibility, ensuring that students are better prepared for the future and empowered to contribute meaningfully to society.
